| The Senate |
Each of the 50 states has two representatives in the Senate. In total, there are exactly 100 senators. Therefore, each state has equal representation in the Senate.
In order to serve in the Senate, you must be at least 30 years old, be a U.S. citizen for the past 9 years, and you must also live in the state that you represent. Each senator serves a term of 6 years. When their 6 year term is over, the people from that state may choose to elect a new senator or keep the same one. There is no limit on the number of terms a senator can serve.
Powers that are unique to the Senate include overseeing any treaties made by the president, approving cabinet officers, Supreme Court Justices, and U.S. ambassadors. They also are in charge of conducting trials against any government official who commits a crime.
