Article II of the US Constitution established the executive department and the powers of the presidency. The executive branch of the United States Government is headed by the President. The President is the leader of the country and also commands the military. He obtains additional support from the Vice President who is the President of the Senate and takes over the President’s duties in times of need. He is also aided by his Cabinet members who advise the President on issues and carry out new or existing policies, and the heads of the Independent Agencies who additionally carry out policy or provide special services.
